Retail Roundup

May 9, 2013

As a social media specialist/PR pro in the retail world, I get out and about to research trends and what’s new in retail land often.  I wanted to start to share some of the great finds out there with you all.  Let’s face it, of course we would all love to shop exclusively at boutiques and fancy online sites, but the majority of us, if not all of us, inevitably find ourselves picking up random pieces from everywhere and anywhere in between.  A Target run for nail polish remover becomes a trip to try on summer swimsuits.  Before you know it, you’ve spent $100 on the suit, the sandals, a beach towel, a nail polish and a magazine, but you forgot what you came for.  I find that wherever I am, there is always SOMETHING I can take home with me.  This is a problem.  This is a product of consumerism and I am working on it.  It helps that I don’t have endless funds.  It also helps to have a camera on my phone.  I can take a photo, think about it, sleep on it, share it on social media and with with you all here.  I love finding things at stores you wouldn’t normally see yourself shopping at.  I just saw “This is 40″ and the main character is crying and saying she is not ready to shop at “old lady” stores and mentions Chico’s and Talbot’s.  I have to disagree!  Check out a couple pieces I found in said stores below.  The other misconception of “mall” shopping is that you must stay clear of the teeny bopper stores.  Not true!  You may go up to a large instead of a medium, I know, the horror, but the prices are a lot more affordable on those trendier pieces you may only wear for a couple seasons.  So here’s the first edition of Retail Roundup, some of my favorite finds over the last week.

1. Statement Necklace from Anthropologie. $68  (Park Meadows)  This would dress up the basic white tee and jeans, and add a blazer in coral or min to make the details pop!

April 25 Phone 2013 116

2. Tribal printed denim by Sanctuary at Sundance. $148  (Park Meadows) Edgy denim to pair with a loose fitting jersey tee in black or gray and gladiator sandals gives you an L.A. look.

April 25 Phone 2013 0993. Cute tote from Talbots. $139 (Park Meadows) I just loved this!  A fun carryall for spring/summer and sturdy!  Love the red and teal color combo!

April 25 Phone 2013 081

4. Bohemian Blouse from J. Crew. $110 (Park Meadows) Lot’s of bohemian inspired prints everywhere, even in the preppy J. Crew.  Add ankle length, light wash skinny jeans with a few rips and a leather sandal and this is the easiest look to head to a soccer game in.

April 25 Phone 2013 0695. Trapese high/low racer-back tank dress from Urban Outfitters. $39 (Park Meadows) The silhouette on this will mask my post pregnancy bod and flatter most figures.  Add a wedge or heeled sandal for height and elongate the look.  A long necklace and great earrings can really dress it up if you have an event too.

April 14 Phone 2013 3266. Leather sandals from Steve Madden. $69.95 (Park Meadows) Need these.  I’d probably get black or tan.

April 14 Phone 2013 3037. Sheer caftan from Chico’s. $109 (Park Meadows) I immediately thought of a trip to Mexico when I saw this.  Even though I am not going anywhere anytime soon.  I would so wear this over a black swimsuit, with a straw fedora hat and a margarita in hand!

April 14 Phone 2013 291

8. Camouflage vest with faux leather shoulder detail at Pacific Sunwear. (Park Meadows) Camo is back, again.  I liked the punky extras on this.  Pair it with ankle grazing skinny jeans or shorts and a white tank.

April 14 Phone 2013 3839. Denim jacket with Native American fabric inlay on back at American Eagle Outfitters. $$59.95 (Park Meadows) LOVE!  An easy throw-on piece, especially over a flowy maxi dress this summer.

April 14 Phone 2013 29710. Printed shorts by Joe Fresh at JC Penney. $19 (Park Meadows) LOVE these in purple or yellow.  Again, add your basic tee, a pair of gold hoops and a couple necklaces and your flip flops, straw tote and go!

April 14 Phone 2013 347April 14 Phone 2013 346Last, there is something about these necklace/detachable collars from Clair’s Accessories that scream potential.  Right?!  I mean, you can’t go wrong with $12!  The only trick is finding the right under shirt, blouse or dress to top it off with.  You don’t want a gap of skin showing or a collar underneath peaking out…

April 14 Phone 2013 340

Hope you liked the first installment of Retail Roundup!  Hope to roll out more of these and also share things I did actually come home with.  What have you seen or purchased lately that you thought was a gem?!

37 Weeks: Spotted Bump

April 28, 2013

full length

I hit 37 weeks on Thursday and continuing on to feel really great.  I felt even better after hitting the Frock Shop sale last Saturday and purchasing this leopard chiffon number by local designer, and friend, Tess Vigil of 50 Dresses!  I was not expecting to find anything that fit me now, but this worked!  Love the pockets on it and it is so comfy!  I have worn it a couple of times- once with black leggings, boots and a black blazer and then with the warm weather yesterday, I opted for low wedge sandals by Franco Sarto and layered a Gap Maternity gray tank underneath.  I hope to continue wearing this dress post baby, and I am sure it will lay much differently then.  It has a deep V opening in the back which I obviously am not exposing now until I get my tone and shape back, but I look forward to altering the straps a tad and wearing this dress for years to come.   the

I will say these last couple of weeks exhaustion has set in (we’re talking sleeping until noon), so yesterday I took it pretty easy.  I was able to get out in the afternoon for a bit to enjoy the gorgeous weather, FINALLY.  I popped in Rooster Moon for an iced latte and headed to West Elm in Cherry Creek for their Etsy pop-up shop feature of local Denver Etsy artists.  I love getting out and seeing local talent and West Elm did a nice job of curating a few fabulous folks designing everything from ceramic pots for air plants, to letterpress cards to hand painted tea towels made in U.S.A.  Last night we headed to the Highlands to see our friends who are newly engaged- YEAH- and we celebrated with authentic Mexican at Tacos Jalisco on 38th- a must TRY!  A delicious day overall.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekends!

Prepping for a Little One: Packing the Hospital Bags

April 18, 2013

hospital bag

The Bag.  Ironically, it’s a leather “Doctor” bag from Ralph Lauren that I purchased about a decade ago on sale.

Apparently, according to MyPregnancy.com I should have done this at Week 32, but I am just now getting around to it- packing the bag for the hospital.  I guess what gave me a nudge was when my friend who was due May 8th had her baby this Sunday after her water borke.  Yup, three and a half weeks early.  Babies are sneaky little surprises when you find out you’re having one and when they decide to make their debut!  I just hit Week 36 today, so I finally finished wrapping up last minute purchases and actually bagging the contents.

I wouldn’t say I was neglecting this.  I am a hyper planner and have been reading blog posts and checklists and pages in pregnancy planners at the bookstore on the topic for months.  I have a note in the iPhone going, but I will say actually getting the items, washing the clothes, well I just did that.  There will still undoubtedly be last minute things to put in the bag.  If we have that eventful, “Babe! My water broke,” moment, then I am sure I will frantically be a hot, wet, mess running around, but I hope to pack as much as I can now.  Come to think of it, in just glancing over at this checklist from our Breathing & Relaxation class at the hospital, there are a few things I missed, STILL.  So pack early and checklist often!

hospital bag contents

boppy

The Boppy Pillow They recommend you bring yours if you are going try a hand, er, breast, at breast feeding.

I was lucky to have been able to borrow this from my sister in law, and I just purchased my own cover for $12.99 at Target.

Edit: I am hearing this may be a hassle more than anything, which I thought too.  One more thing I have to wash when I get home.

I may leave it and just fumble with a hospital pillow for a couple days.

belly bandit

The Belly Bandit.  For post labor.  I am strapping this baby on immediately to hopefully get that muscle memory going!

I found this the other day by accident at a Super Target near the maternity bras, and on CLEARANCE!  I was expecting to get one from a maternity store, but I happened to stumble upon it at Target- score!  I got it for $34.98, when it’s regularly $50 there.  I have seen versions as high as $80 elsewhere.  Recommendations:  try it on!  You want it to feel snug and have room to adjust tighter after baby, so take it in the dressing room!  Read the box for sizing instructions.  I am almost due so I may get larger, but this size is able to go on now and still get tighter.  The goal is for it to be TIGHT.

birth plan

The Birth Plan.  You should type some things up.  I wasn’t on the birth-plan-band-wagon until I progressed further into my pregnancy and realized after discussion with my spouse on certain things, after the classes, and after discovering that there are some things I hope/wish to do with my birthing and labor experience.  No, I am not planning to put my placenta in a smoothie, but things as simple as pacifiers or skin to skin contact, and many other things, should be addressed in writing.  Just don’t forget to show it to the nurses and medical team when you get there!  You don’t need a ten pager, but try to address how you want your labor to go- drugs or no drugs, what you want to happen after baby is delivered- bathe or skin to skin right away.  Google a few online for outlines.  Make sure your partner is aware of your wishes too in case, God forbid, something should happen to you to prevent you from communicating your wishes.

Photo for a focal point.  If you plan to have a natural birth, it might be a good idea to have a personal photo to focus on during those last few pushes, or during that long beginning labor.  Something to give you hope that there is indeed an end to the pain and you get a little one out of the deal.  A sonogram is nice too.

Notepad and pen.  This is nice o have in case you have visitors who bring gifts or you need your partner or someone to run home to pick items up, or you want to jot down first memories and experiences for later.

thank you giftsThank Yous for the nurses/doctor, or staff that made your stay special.  A nice box of chocolate or treats for them to share is nice too- I may get that later because who doesn’t love food!  These little nest favors have handmade shea butter soaps in the shape of bird eggs made by my awesome sis.  These were also the favors at my baby shower and I had a few extra.

jammies

Jammies for you.  I ended up exchanging that hospital green robe for this violet one.  Same brand, Gilligan & O’Malley, from my favorite place- Target.  It is so SOFT!  Plus as I mentioned before, it is long enough to cover the tush, and it has pockets.  I also bought a little yellow nightie with buttons, Earth Angels from JC Penney, and this is the Anne Klein pj set I posted about before from Nordstrom Rack.  I also have a nursing cami, also Gilligan & O’Malley from Target, and jammie pants, whale printed by Nautica from Ross, for options.  You never know how long or short your stay might be.  You can plan and set limitations on guests, but you still might want to look somewhat presentable if not for them, for YOURSELF!  I have been feeling especially more “girly” lately.  Perhaps because I am carrying a girl, hence the pinks and little floral nightgown.  I feel like they are soft and sweet and visually appealing for her!  I also packed a nursing bra, a couple pairs of briefs and a sleeping nursing bra.  I plan to leave hospital in the outfit I arrive in, probably a stretchy maxi dress.

personals

Personals.  Of course you are in a hospital, if you plan to have a hospital delivery that is, so they will most likely have some of these items for you.  I think it’s nice to have your own options and items on hand though in case you need it NOW and can’t wait for the nurse to answer the call button, etc.  I have been using Palmer’s Cocoa Butter my entire pregnancy and it has been kind to me, so i plan to keep that supple skin going and plan to lather up after as well.  Remember that stretch marks can come from skin rapidly expanding or, SHRINKING!  Lanolin by Lansinoh is what I hear is recommended for sore nipples.  Hair ties, bands and pins for getting that hair out of your face during labor, of course I will probably arrive in a top knot/bun.  Panty liners and refreshing wipes (we’ll see how it all goes down there for sensitivity.)  Disposable breast pad liners, assuming breast milk is in (most likely won’t be enough flow in hospital to need them, but just in case!)  EOS lip balm, I keep hearing how great it is, and Preggie Pops hard candies for labor.  I hear your mouth gets DRY!

Toiletries. Deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner (travel size), lotion, travel nail grooming kit, comb/brush, makeup (minimal), and gum.

Still to Pack:

  • Flip Flops (for shower and walking around hospital room)
  • Heating pad
  • Coconut Water (heard it is really good hydration for labor)
  • Camera
  • Phone/charger
  • Laptop (maybe)
  • Snacks for post labor and hubby (thinking dry goods like trail mixes, bars and yogurt covered pretzels)
  • Massage oil for relaxation
  • Tennis ball or hand massage tool for relaxation
  • Change for vending machines before cafeteria opens and for hubby

And now for that newborn I’ll be getting to take home- FINALLY!  So technically all you REALLY need, according to the checklist from my class, is a “Taking Home” outfit, which they recommend a basic onesie, a receiving blanket, socks, a hat, baby nail clippers or emery board (why?! do these nails grow by the minute?!), baby book for footprints and the car seat.  I am definitely over packing her bag here and hope to scale it back some.  This is also NOT how I plan to pack her bag for an outing.  You would also love to think, wow I am due in May, weather will be warm. WRONG!  Not in Colorado!  Not if you’re early!  We just got dumped on this weekend!  Makes planning harder as far as blanket weights and clothing, car seat cozies, etc.  I am assuming I go to term and it is seasonal spring temps.

baby bag

The Bag.  A Nordstrom Rack score!  Rebecca Minkoff.

diaper bag essentialsEssentials.  These I plan to just keep in there all the time.  Aquaphor for preventing diaper rash.  In Infant Care class they recommend applying this at every diaper change to avoid getting a rash.  Two disposable changing pads.  The bag comes with a nice fold out one, but what about those other times when you’re in public and don’t want to put your clean pad on a dirty, germ infested changer and roll it back up to put in your bag?  DISPOSABLE!  Also, scented diaper sacks for dirty nappies.  Not so much for public, unless it’s tight quarters, but mostly for visits to homes.  Kleenex.  Clorox Stain Remover pen and Shout to Go wipes to prevent stains form blowouts and spit up, as much as possible anyway.  Also, a larger freezer Ziploc bag for dirty clothes.  I also plan to carry Lansinoh for the nips, an extra top for mom, extra outfit for babe, and breast pads but all of this is not needed for hospital.

blankies

Burp Cloth and Blankies.  A burp cloth by Aden & Anais (found at Ross randomly), flannel chevron printed receiving blankie from Target (love this modern set), a bamboo muslin swaddle blankie from Aden & Anais, (to use for swaddling yes, but also as a nursing cover) and a thicker “stroller” blanket for car seat by NoHi kids from Talulah Jones on 17th and Downing.  The hospital will provide blankies when we’re in there, but I want to use my things and get her used to her things right away.  Plus, if I am nursing I want to use comforting fabrics, prints in hopes they will aid the process.  Never know if you want a photo opportunity and want to throw down a cuter blanket too!

newborn

Newborn gear.  All that’s missing is a diaper!  They recommend these little side snap tops with built in mittens.  I bought a pack of two by Gerber at Target.  Sockies also from Target.  I should buy stock.  Newborn cap purchased a couple years ago from Gymboree on sale.  Again, the hospital will most likely put her in one of these tops and a hat, but I like knowing I have my own in case, in case of…I don’t know…and the socks and hat are just to give her a little character!

Now, onto the take home outfits.  Which one?!

baby outfits 1

Left to Right: Sun top and pants by Kissy Kissy ( a boutique brand) found at Aurora’s Kid to Kid Consignment shop, and like brand new!  BabyGap flats, a gift from a friend at my shower.  A little impractical for her first few days, but too cute not to at least try on!!!  Striped booties from a Dutch baby boutique in San Fran from way back in 2007 when I lived there.  Animal printed bamboo cotton sac by Kicky Pants from Little Me’s in Cherry Creek (the SOFTEST fabric ever!) and little pants to go underneath by Julia, also from Little Me’s.  I brought this sac because it is TEENY TINY and if I have a big baby, I hope to squeeze her in it at least once, if only for a quick pic!  Pants to go underneath, for car seat straps…

OR

baby outfits 2

Left to Right: Jammies with watermelon embroidery from Nordstrom Rack, and striped pink knot hat from BabyGap.  White romper (also TEENY TINY) by Those Baby Basics, floral ear hat by Feather Baby from Nest Boutique on Larimer, and TINY socks by Circo, a gift from my neighbor.

Hope you found this somewhat helpful if you are in this stage yourself or plan to be some day.  If you have already gone through this, any tips or suggestions?  Did I leave anything out?  What did you pack?!  Let the count down begin- T minus 4 weeks!

35 Weeks: Polka Dots and Rolling my Ankle

April 15, 2013

35 Weeks close_edited-1

This past Thursday we had our 35 week check up!  Can’t believe how fast it all went and we are literally in the waiting period now.  I decided to “dress up” for the doc visit and put on this polka dot skirt from Target.  I find that for doctor visits when you need to put jelly goop on your tummy and may or may not need an exam, skirts and dresses are by far the way to go.  The wedges, while cute, proved to be an impractical choice of footwear.  I wore them all day, including to walk around Park Meadows, wherein I rolled my left ankle, lifting the right one to scratch!  I have super bendy ligaments (probably from ballet and gymnastics) so it didn’t hurt at the time, but tender today.  I have rolled my ankles in these shoes before…should have been my clue not to wear them preggo!  Duh!  A basic white tee from Ross, a thrifted brass bead necklace with Stella & Dot “Gigi Studs” finished the Friday ensemble.

My weekend was spent doing a little baby laundry, prepping my hospital bag, putting batteries in the bouncy chair and getting necessities at Walmart.  Friday night we had a delicious dinner!  The mister and I went downtown to Mongolian BBQ.  As we were waiting around the grill for our bowls to be cooked up, a guy standing next to my husband gestured down at his bowl, and/or my stomach, and said, “Baby’s eating good tonight!”  Why yes, yes she did…

34 Weeks: Babymoons are Overrated

April 13, 2013

Aspen wall_edited-1

What is a “Babymoon?”  Well, it turns out they are hyped up, last trips you take with your partner before the little bundle comes, and you’re supposed to “live it up” or “enjoy it while you can,” because supposedly you will never, EVER, be alone or travel again.  Well, that is what I gathered a “babymoon” to be via all these books, magazine articles, blog posts and banter amongst friends.  Turns out, mine was a #fail.

We decided to take a road trip to the mountains rather than spending tons on airfare, we could use that for hospital bills right, and I had decided on Aspen because I wanted to see it and had never been, even considering I am a Colorado native.  Skiers we are not.   “Mountain people,” as my hubby calls it, we are not.  Anyhow, I was hoping for a nice, romantic 2 day getaway in the crisp mountain air.  Perhaps a flake or two, cozy hot cocoas on strolls and maybe a fireplace warmup.  Wrong!  When we arrived in Aspen, it was warmer there than it was in Denver!  In the sixties!  There went the cozy.

Our hotel was nice and comfortable, but the town was D.E.A.D.  We wanted peace and quiet, not a ghost town!  All of the shops were outrageously expensive, which I knew ahead of time they would be, but seriously, we actually saw a $50 Dora the Explorer tank top in the Boogies boutique!  The restaurants were pretty much the same.  This was definitely not the destination for a budget conscious couple expecting a baby!  What was I thinking?!  I admit I made a mistake.  Should we have gone to Pueblo, or maybe even stopped at Glenwood Springs?

The first day was truly fun!  I mean, we were in Aspen for goodness sake!  We explored the town, had some gelato cones at Paradise, and we spontaneously bought tickets for some live music at local venue Belly Up.  We had a perfect seat ion the house, and literally put our feet up, had good food and listened to great tunes (not anything we would have downloaded) but listening to music live, any genre, just does something to the soul.  I AM glad we did this together before baby.  Day two was another story…

We didn’t just head for the hills for a babymoon, but also to celebrate our second year anniversary and my 30th birthday.  Perhaps it was the hormones, but my emotions got the best of me and I was a moody mess come April 4th.  Up and down, I was experiencing major mood swings and I sadly managed to ruin pretty much the entire day.  I know this is supposed to be happy, lovey dovey news, right?  I know!  That’s why I am sharing with you!  Sometimes blog worthy news isn’t “fabulous” or “amazing.”  Sometimes bloggers have bad days and ruin trips.  I made my husband miserable.  I feel HORRIBLE just thinking about it!  I spent a lot of time napping in the hotel, the exhaustion has officially set in and the energy I had the entire pregnancy has slowly been deflating from my ever INFLATING bod.

I felt completely exhausted up there, and HEAVY.  We did manage to salvage the evening somewhat.  I have to admit I was still in a funk but I tried my damnedest for my poor hubby.  We headed to Snowmass Village, to the Viceroy.  A gorgeous, trendy hotel with a lot more people watching than in town, we headed there for some dessert that they were known for.  The hostess wouldn’t seat us in the dining area.  She said the kitchen was closing in 20 minutes and it was only 8:30!  So, we didn’t even get to have a nice birthday dinner.  We sat in the lounge and hacked through a chewy, tough, peanut butter something or other.  It was not our idea of a to-die-for dessert as all the articles and waitress had made it seem.  Again we tried to save the evening.  We headed back into downtown Aspen and hit up Ryno’s Pies and Pints so hubby could at least enjoy another beer before his preggo wife had to turn in.   Even though I was super ready for bed, I tried to make it a while longer.   I really did enjoy watching my handsome guy on that snow mobile simulation game, and we played Pac Man together for the first time ever, and I lost horribly to him at fuse-ball.  Memories were made, albeit my sour puss face.

What I learned about myself, my relationship and what really matters most:

1. Babymoons were probably concocted by the tourist industry.  Definitely a scheme to get your money before the baby does.

2. Persons who have a baby on board have no business in a ski town at 34 weeks preggo.  Even the small, brisk walks through the town had me winded, and the higher elevation, even higher than that of Denver, made the baby sit lower on my bladder and I felt the urge to pee with every step.  Exhaustion and emotions hit me hard this week, and I unfortunately and embarrassingly took it out on my poor, adoring, loving husband.  Definitely not what anyone wants to do on a babymoon!

3. Babymoons put unnecessary pressure on you and your partner to “have fun” when you very well may have been doing it all along, as we were.  A babymoon to me is a  Saturday we had a couple weeks ago when we took a day trip downtown.  We took the Light Rail,  had a slice of Anthony’s Pizza and strolled the 16th Street Mall.  Or, a lazy Sunday morning watching “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” (hubby had never seen it), drinking tea, and cuddled up on the sofa after a big pancake breakfast.  Now THOSE, those are babymoon moments that I am soaking in before this baby comes.  No buzz word needed.  Time with your partner.  Quality time, doing what you love to do, and always have, that is what is worth every second leading up to a big change like adding a family member.  It’s also these things that we will CONTINUE to do, well after baby is in the picture.  When you love someone, you don’t need an excuse, a fancy name, or an exclusive destination to show it, because whatever you two were doing in the first place to get to this point of creating a little life together is more than enough.  Last, my husband was patient, more than any normal person should have been in that situation.  He is loving, selfless, humble, and would give me the world if he had it in his pocket.  He surprised me with a sweet gift card to Cos Bar because he remembered me saying I wanted to go in when we passed by it.  The gorgeous man I love more than anything told me he went into Prada intending to get me a gift certificate but didn’t realize a dress cost $5,000.  This. Makes. My. Heart. Melt.

So, did you take a babymoon?  Do you plan to?  I might suggest you take it in your second trimester.  :)

Let’s Talk Maternity Clothes: How to Get Through Nine Months of Changes on a Budget

April 2, 2013

February 27 2013 062

Hello again blog!!!  I have been a busy bee lately.  In my final trimester, I have been busily nesting away, organizing and re-organizing, and enjoying my freedom to run around town or go nowhere at all, have a quiet coffee with a stack of magazines at Barnes & Noble and just really soak in this time before my life changes forever.  Oh, and my mom and sis threw me an incredible baby shower a couple Sundays ago!  Despite the snow the night before, it turned out to be a gorgeous day filled with beautiful people who came out to spoil this babe.

I have been meaning to do a post on the subject of maternity clothing for a while.  So last night, I pulled out every single item I have purchased since I got pregnant, and snapped away with my phone.  The quality is not super great, but I knew I had to do it or it might never happen!  Plus, I have a little bit to say on the subject and wanted to share with you all who might be expecting or thinking of having a baby in the future.  After putting this post together I missed a couple of dresses I had purchased, but the rest is all here.

Sure it’s fun to see all these celebs and their fashionable bumps splashing the pages of People, (except Kim, what is up with her maternity style, and her looks can NOT be comfortable), but not all of us have the lavish wardrobe budgets to go out and buy a closet full of Pea in the Pod.  At least I didn’t.  Plus, even if you do have a larger budget, let’s face it, who wants to spend a lot of money on temporary clothes that they will probably hate after the birth of their babe and either give them away to a friend, donate or stow away in a Tupperware for next time.  I knew I didn’t!  I was determined, and still am, to creatively maximize the articles of clothing I already own, repeat looks and pieces, and only ONLY purchase necessities when I absolutely had/have to.  You would be surprised at how many things you can still wear from your pre-bump days well into maternity!  If you are trying to conceive, think ahead and purchase items with a bump in mind.

Here are some things you may already own, or you should plan on investing in leading up to conception:

1. The maxi dress!  Not only a closet staple for summer, these forgiving jersey floor skimmers are great for pregnancy too!  Just top them off with a denim jacket, open and long cardigan or a blazer.  Wear with flats, or dress up with heels.  Purchase in thicker fabrics or different colors and textures depending on the season.  You definitely don’t want to be wearing a super light weight, cotton white maxi in the dead of winter, but you can (and I did) pull of a black and white striped tank maxi during my fall/winter maternity with a jacket and cute scarf.

April 2013 218

Left to Right: forest green maxi from American Apparel (purchased in February), olive green tank maxi from American Apparel (purchased in February),

navy jumpsuit from Ross $12.99 (purchased in March for my baby shower)

April 2013 213

Left to Right: Striped jersey dress and chambray dress/top purchased in second trimester at a sale at Dillard’s, polka dot skirt from Target, purchased in second trimester, and gray knit maxi by Heidi Klum maternity from Destination Maternity purchased in second trimester.

2. Long open cardi!  I fortunately already had two gray versions in my closet pre-pregnancy, but I cannot tell you how many times I wore them!  Cozy, and the length is key!  Something about the bump growth in front and needing to sometimes balance out the kidney bean shaped profile out back with a longer cardi or blazer.  It helps, promise.  Also, at home, I wore them constantly with workout pants or velour sweats and a tank or tee.  You NEED cozy clothes because by the time you get home, with all that extra heat pumpin’ through you, all you want to do is strip that damn bra off and get in stretchies!  EVEN fashion peeps.  I found my gray cardis at Ross (left) and the Chico’s cashmere belted version (right) was a thrift store score!

April 2013 229

April 2013 219

Heart sweater from Madewell, purchased on sale (plus additional 30% off) in second trimester, and red stretchy tunic from a boutique purchased in second trimester.

3. Long, loose tunic tops!  These tops are luckily in style, preggo or not.  You can find these ANYWHERE!  I wore several I already had including a white one from H&M, a bright pink silky one from the thrift store, a black one from H&M and the two I purchased below.  The tan one was from Nordstrom Rack, Nordstrom label, and the maroon one was from Soft Surroundings in Park Meadows.  Both were purchase in my first trimester (Aug/Sep/Oct).  I have not worn these two since the first trimester honestly.  In the beginning these tops are great because you can hide the “awkward” stage, before your belly pops.  A lot of people didn’t even know I was expecting.  You don’t need a slew of them, just choose a couple in a color palette that flatter your skin tone, and again, think of the season.  I was pregnant during a colder season, which I am thankful for.  I got away with not having to purchase a winter coat (mine still fit) and I went without one most of the time with layers, if you are just going in and out of your car and indoors.

April 2013 216Ingrid & Isabel black long sleeve maternity tee purchased in first trimester and still wearing, maroon blouse from Soft Surroundings purchased in  first trimester, and tan blouse from Nordstrom Rack purchased in first trimester (no longer wearing the blouses but I have them for post baby).

April 2013 214

Black and white short sleeve sweater (Kirna Zabete for Target) purchased in first trimester, still wearing, Love sweater from Target, purchased in second trimester and still wearing and coral striped blouse from old Navy, purchased in second trimester and still wearing.  All can be worn post baby.

April 2013 210

Sheer black tank vest and wide leg cotton pants with elastic waist (both from Pacific Sunwear and purchased in first trimester)

4. Bras!  I bought these pretty EARLY on in the pregnancy as they were the FIRST thing to bloom!  Be prepared to purchase them again post-birth.  I lucked out with a New Years Day sale at Dillard’s this year and purchased three.  Definitely purchase a nude.  I wish I had bought a strapless for tanks and special occasion dresses, and am headed out to get an affordable one this week as the temps are warming up.  don’t spend a lot, because you will most likely grow when your milk comes in for nursing, and then (sadly) from what I hear, shrink down.  No use in spending lots of dough at Sol Lingerie or even Victoria’s Secret, when you are just going to be this size temporarily.  Just be sure to get one that is supportive, and COMFORTABLE!  You can find GREAT brands at department stores, Maidenform and Wacoal, and even check discounters like Ross at TJ Maxx.  Try to get them on sale!

5. Long sleeve jersey tees, tees and tanks that run long in the body!  Sounds basic, and they are!  I had some great basics in my closet already that got MAJOR wear.  I found the best brands that were  long enough to cover the belly, nothing is more annoying then air hitting your belly because your tops are cropping up, and stretchy, and SOFT, were C&C California, Michael Stars, even a top I had from Forever 21, and Nordstrom brand Halogen.  Look for these on sale and try to get a black, white, and navy or a solid color that flatters.  Stripes are still on trend, so a navy blue and white striped one is great too.  I did invest in one long sleeve black jersey tee by maternity line, Isabel and Ingrid back in my first trimester.  it was a little pricier, I purchased it at my pre-natal yoga studio, but I have worn it the ENTIRE pregnancy and can wear it afterwards.

Left to Right: Brown long sleeve/hooded tee by Michael Stars (several years old and not a single hole or snag), coral long sleeve scoop neck tee by C &C California (purchased several years ago, both from Nordstrom).  Good wear and wash…

April 2013 223

Left to Right: Gray waffle long sleeve tee by Bump in the Night, purchased at Macy’s on sale $7.99 (Monday/third trimester for the growing belly), and the black knit sweater was just purchased from Gap Maternity on Monday, on sale, for $7.97!!!)  So soft, and the length covers the bum!  Plan to wear this one well after pregnancy!

6. Wrap dress!  I wore MANY of the dresses I already had in my closet, but I did purchase a red wrap dress from Nordstrom rack in my second trimester.  Fabric is stretchy and the tie looks cute tied above the bump.  Plus, I can/will most likely be able to wear it post-pregnancy.  That’s another major point, IF you purchase anything, try to purchase things you like well enough that you can and would wear post pregnancy too.  Use your noggin!

April 2013 220

7. A GOOD pair of maternity denim!  Good does not mean expensive, but if you have extra funds, or find yourself with a gift card, as I did, I say splurge on ONE good pair of jeans to get you through.  I love dresses, but I can tell you I LOVED wearing my AG dark blue skinny maternity jeans while being preggo!  Once your waistline grows and a lot of your dresses/skirts can’t be worn anymore, you will need a pair of slip-them-on-and-go pair of pants.  Mine were as pricey as a designer pair of denim, gulp $200, but I had a gift card and knew they would get maximum wear, and I will keep them for the next time as the quality is superb.  They won’t fall apart!  Go with a cut/color that you will most likely wear the most if you were not preggo.  When purchasing them, you actually purchase the size you are now (ask sales associate for fitting help).  I personally did not mind my belly being covered, tights and maternity pants could go above my belly and I felt fine; in fact, I felt it was like a built in Spanx.  But you might not prefer that.  They also make maternity pants that go below belly.  I purchased mine from Destination Maternity.  I did not need purchase them until my second trimester, early January.  I also purchase a couple “fun” pairs of maternity pants to feel like my self if I felt like being more fashionable.  I purchased the mint green and coral skinny pants from Ross believe it or not, and they were $12.99 each!  I JUST saw both of these colors in a similar cut pant at Gap maternity yesterday, but for a whole lot more.  Shop around and use your noggin!  The wild, patterned pair is from H&M, back in my first trimester.  I bought them before I needed them and I am glad I did.  I have worn them several times.  H&M downtown carries maternity clothing, but the one at Cherry Creek does not.  You can get colored skinnies here too.

April 2013 211

Left to Right: Animal print stretch pants from Madewell, purchased in first trimester and still wearing (wore them tonight in third trimester!), H&M printed skinnies, purchased in first trimester and still wearing, mint and coral skinny pants from Ross purchased in second trimester and still wearing, and my AG maternity jeans purchased in second trimester and still wearing.

8. Wedge sneakers, Toms, or cute sneakers!  I am so NOT a flats person.  Never was.  I have a high arch and actually am more comfortable in heels.  I am still sporting heels, but if I am running around town all day, I am slipping on laceless Converse sneaks (from Ross), Toms on my yoga days, or wedge sneakers (from Love Culture) if I want to feel downtown cool.  All of my boots and what pairs of flats I already owned have also got use.  Depending on the season you are preggo in, you will definitely need some comfortable/supportive, flat soled shoe.  be it a sandal, a riding boot or the canvas Toms.  If nothing more than to slip them on and run to Target or walk the dog.

9. Bigger panties!  Obviously not pictured.  You get the point.  I was able to still purchase the style I wear now, just in a larger size, but as your pregnancy goes on, you may need more coverage in the nether region.  As your friends… Also, post pregnancy, you will need to purchase a full coverage brief or panty for the aftermath.  This is what I am reading and hearing anyway.  I will purchase a package of Jockeys from, Target as I get closer to my due date.

10. An LBD! Not a mandatory item, but it definitely depends on your lifestyle.  I am currently at home, but there were several holidays and special occasions that came up during my pregnancy that called for a dress including a wedding, an engagement party, New Year’s Eve, a fashion show and an upcoming dinner date in a couple days celebrating our anniversary.  I was able to wear a black sequin dress for New Year’s Eve as well as a friend’s engagement party at Strings because it was stretchy (both occasions in second trimester.)  The fashion show was a stretch, but I was able to squeeze into a vintage number that I wore to a wedding last summer, pre-preggo.  It had a side drape and zip, but I got into it (third trimester)!  for my baby shower, I purchased an affordable, and flattering navy spandex jumpsuit (photographed above) and accessorized.  I can wear it postpartum as well.  Just look at your calendar ahead for the next nine months and see what special o’s you might be attending and needing a gown or cocktail dress for.  Take a peek at what you have, try it on, pull it out to see if it might stretch over a bump, and when you spot a jersey or spandex or stretchy dress that might work dazzled up with accessories, snag it for when the time comes.  I JUSt found this LBD by Motherhood Maternity on the clearance rack at Macy’s on Monday for $14.99!  Velour skirt, body conscious and a slight cowl drape neck line!  So flattering!  I plan to wear it on our Babymoon in Aspen this week.

Photo does not do this dress justice, so I hope to get a photo actually in it.  Found on clearance at Macy’s, by Motherhood Maternity, $14.99 on sale.

11. For Birth and Postpartum: Nursing tanks/cute jammies for hospital and visitors (nursing friendly), robe for hospital/slippers or flip-flops for hospital!  Don’t forget to save a little budget for that final stretch and post birth!  I found these Anne Klein jammies at Nordstrom Rack ($28.97) back in my first trimester and bought them in a large size thinking ahead.  They have a drawstring waist cropped pant and a button down top (easy access for nursing) and the print is fun.  I just found the teal robe by Gilligan & O’Malley ($21.99) and fuzzy flip-flops by Xhileration ($12.99) at Target last week; both perfect for bathroom trips and strolling the hospital hallways.  I guess this color is a little hospitaly, but I like it anyway and the fabric is so soft, and nice big pockets and longer length to cover the tush.  On my maternity shopping trip this Monday, I ran into a sale at Gap!  30% off additionally on sale items and 40% off a ton of things, including their Pure Body tanks!  Originally $14.50 each, I got them for $8 each!  I purchased a classic black and heather gray (third trimester belly growth has all my tops cropping up).  The nursing tanks were found at Target last week, $19.99 each, both by this line called Gilligan & O’Malley.  I really liked the button detailing on the heather gray one and the navy/white stripes and lace detail on the other.  Sort of “trendy” as far as nursing tops go…

Maternity tanks on left from Gap Maternity, and the nursing tops from Target.

Take hand me downs with a happy heart!  My friend Tess gave me these three tops, and I have worn them!  The trapeze style printed tank was my favorite!  Thanks Tess!

Last thoughts:  Work your accessories!  Long necklaces, earrings, head wraps, scarves, even belts!  Also, I have managed to wear my blazers by leaving them open, obviously.  Finally, have fun with your changing body, and be sure to document here and there if not for a blog or Instagram posting, but for yourself and your future child to look back on fondly.  I have been fortunate enough to have had an AMAZING experience with pregnancy.  Nine months goes fast, so soak it all in and enjoy the ride!  I’ll admit that the first trimester is the most awkward.  You aren’t yet showing, and you just look really pudgy and you might feel like you have “side fat”, but don’t worry, your body has to gain a little weight in the middle first for it to fill out.  Consignment shops and mommy groups are also a great resource to tap for gently used maternity clothes, but honestly, I find that the most flattering clothing is non-maternity!  Why do they insist on adding awkward ties and thin, unflattering belts on tops?!  I will admit that I am a little anxious to get back to exercise and just FEELING like my physical self again, I mean I get winded just going up stairs and rolling over in bed at night or getting up to pee seems like a small workout, but there will be plenty of time to safely lose the weight later.  So if you have been pregnant what items could you not live without?  If you are planning to get pregnant, did you find this helpful?

I am really enjoying my little e-mail newsletter from Denver Tidbits, especially when there is news that I haven’t heard 100 times already, like the Grand Opening of the new kate spade store in Cherry Creek North!   They are having a little pre-opening soiree this Thursday, March 14, from 6 – 8 p.m. and guests of the party will get 20% off full price purchases, delightful treats and more.  This is a private party, meaning you need to shoot an e-mail RSVP to nysocial@katespade.com to let them know you are coming.  You should probably sign up for Denver Tidbits e-mail newsletters while you’re at it so you can hear about these things for yourself!

After checking out kate spade online, here is what caught my fancy!  The Billie Dress with the bow back detail above, ($398), the Checkered Myrna Top below, ($228), the Licorice pump in pink ($328), and the new crop of un-baby “Baby Bags,” especially the Grove Floral Harmony Baby Bag, ($398).  Tax returns could not come soon enough!

30 Weeks and a Prairie Skirt

March 7, 2013

white close up

Two outfit posts in a row?!  Look out world, it’s sunny and warm in Denver!  The calm before the storm we are supposed to get Saturday I guess… Got a late start on the day today.  Starting to get more sleepy… uh oh…here comes the final stretch!  I ran to the P.O. to mail out another Rolypolyz order (my vintage baby clothing Etsy shoo)- wohoo!  Also did some returns at Target, tried the new Hazelnut Macchiato at Starbucks (a tall, and boy was it flavorlicious!)  and then I got to meet another friend’s new baby!  I love to meet with my new mommy friends to hear all of their unique birth stories, nursing tales, joys and challenges of first time motherhood.  They are all SO different, no two stories are alike, but I really do enjoy soaking up their experiences and of course seeing all the newbies and their googly eyes!  I wore a long prairie skirt from the Bar III line at Macy’s, Merona ankle cowboy boots from a swap, a white tank under a white peasant top from H&M, AND the best part is… no coat!  Oh wait, another best part?!  That there turban/headband thingy on my head!  A dear friend made that for me!  The talent around me….I swear.  I am really excited for the Paper Fashion Show tomorrow night, just hope the weather doesn’t completely stink.  Now what to wear for that?!  Hope you all had a beautiful Thursday!  What are your weekend plans?

30 Weeks and a Gypsy Dress

March 6, 2013

gypsy face

I was in a vintage vibe today and the weather could NOT have been more beautiful to bust out this light weight, gypsy-like number.  I first wore this thrifted dress earlier this summer to an event, pre-preggo, but it’s been on my mind to wear it now during maternity because of the elastic waist, which I scrunched up above the bump, perfect length and flowy forgiveness.  I wore it with maroon tights from Target, (surprisingly they are the regular Merona tights, not maternity) and Nine West boots found at TJ Maxx last fall. The Cleo Fringe Statement earrings by Stella and Dot, a vintage toggle chain, and a collection of vintage, thrifted and gifted bangles and voila!  I had a wonderful lunch with a friend and her beautiful, sweet, sweet 4 month old baby boy today at Parisi in the Highlands (44th & Tennyson).  It was such a casual vibe, but delicious, authentic Italian eats, and this 30 week bump did not hold back!  I must have been hungry because before lunch I stepped into Kid to Kid, a children’s consignment shop near my home, and scored a nearly brand new copy of, “The Baby and Toddler Cookbook” for just $2.99!  Hopefully it will inspire me to dish up some yumminess for the babe!  Hope you were able to get out for a bit and enjoy this gorgeous weather, the calm before the storm as they say!  If you are a mommy, did you make your own baby food?  Have any good tips or recipes?!

Art Director’s Club of Denver Hosts the 9th Annual Paper Fashion Show: COME!

February 27, 2013

Have you ever watched a roll of receipt paper coil itself through and spit itself out with a bunch of ink on it?  Remember that old school printer paper with the green and white stripes and the little bitty holes along the edges?  Well, have you ever fantasized about wrapping yourself in such materials?  Okay, probably not.  It was a stretch to assume you all would want to be draped in paper, but that is exactly what artists, graphic designers, fashion designers, and even architects have been working on doing for the 9th Annual Paper Fashion show coming up on Friday, March 8th, 2013!

I have always wanted to attend this one of a kind, spectacular showcase!  Not just because it has something to do with fashion, but more so because it is the type of Denver event to draw such an interesting cast of participants from all industries and levels of experience.  The audience it attracts is nothing short of fascinating as well.  Did I mention all of the dresses designed are COMPLETELY constructed, fastened and pieced together from PAPER?!  Yes indeedy!  The sacred stuff we’re trying to use less of.  These are not headed for the garbage post show, nor the nearest shredder- they are truly works of ART!  Art, that gets auctioned off for a wonderful cause of course!  This year,  the proceeds from the auction will benefit Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA).  This hits a little close to home, as my step mother and father were one of the first along East Colfax to open a gallery- AMP Gallery to be exact, which stood for Artists, Musicians and Poets.  My folks have moved to Florida, but I am so happy to help support this budding art district and its programs, and hope to see it flourish.

This year I am FINALLY getting a chance to attend and see the action live and I am so excited!  You can get tickets yourself here, and check back here post show for my coverage of the event.  Act today- tickets are going like hot cakes and they will not be sold at the door.

A little background on the event put on by the Art Director’s Club of Denver:

What is the Paper Fashion Show™?

Designers create fashions from paper donated by xpedx®. These fashions are showcased at our grand runway show, and voted on by a panel of judges.  The categories for critique are Originality, Creative Complexity, Overall Presentation and Technical Attributes.  The show is taking place March 8th 2013 in the Seawell Grand Ballroom at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, in Denver.  Part of the proceeds from the auctioned fashion designs at the Paper Fashion Show™ benefit Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA), a local community organization that provides after-school arts programs for at-risk youth. Kids participate in projects that help build self-esteem and increase connection to the community. ADCD has donated more than $22,500 to DAVA since the Paper Fashion Show’s™ conception in 2004.

Inside scoop from one of the designers, Anh Phan:

anh_not_on_1337061499_600AND…I have a SUPER talented friend, Anh Phan, in the show!  This will be her fifth year participating and this year she plans to work with something a little different- paper sequins!  There is so SO much work and detail, and MANY MANY HOURS of labor that go into all of these looks and I am excited to attend and cheer Anh on!  She also shared that she is sponsored by Gruppo Cordenons, a specialty paper mill, this year!  Nice job Anh!  She says the look she is going for this time around is “edgy, sparkly and fabulous!”  Sounds like it’s right up Fashion Folio’s alley!

Anh is also about to launch her own website, which I can not wait to scoop, Style for Breakfast.  Yup, she’s like a triple threat…She is hoping to launch it right before the show and she will share behind the scenes coverage of her inspiration and creative process leading up to the show.  You can also check out her inspiration board on Pinterest here.
