Art Director’s Club of Denver Hosts the 9th Annual Paper Fashion Show: COME!

Have you ever watched a roll of receipt paper coil itself through and spit itself out with a bunch of ink on it?  Remember that old school printer paper with the green and white stripes and the little bitty holes along the edges?  Well, have you ever fantasized about wrapping yourself in such materials?  Okay, probably not.  It was a stretch to assume you all would want to be draped in paper, but that is exactly what artists, graphic designers, fashion designers, and even architects have been working on doing for the 9th Annual Paper Fashion show coming up on Friday, March 8th, 2013!

I have always wanted to attend this one of a kind, spectacular showcase!  Not just because it has something to do with fashion, but more so because it is the type of Denver event to draw such an interesting cast of participants from all industries and levels of experience.  The audience it attracts is nothing short of fascinating as well.  Did I mention all of the dresses designed are COMPLETELY constructed, fastened and pieced together from PAPER?!  Yes indeedy!  The sacred stuff we’re trying to use less of.  These are not headed for the garbage post show, nor the nearest shredder- they are truly works of ART!  Art, that gets auctioned off for a wonderful cause of course!  This year,  the proceeds from the auction will benefit Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA).  This hits a little close to home, as my step mother and father were one of the first along East Colfax to open a gallery- AMP Gallery to be exact, which stood for Artists, Musicians and Poets.  My folks have moved to Florida, but I am so happy to help support this budding art district and its programs, and hope to see it flourish.

This year I am FINALLY getting a chance to attend and see the action live and I am so excited!  You can get tickets yourself here, and check back here post show for my coverage of the event.  Act today- tickets are going like hot cakes and they will not be sold at the door.

A little background on the event put on by the Art Director’s Club of Denver:

What is the Paper Fashion Show™?

Designers create fashions from paper donated by xpedx®. These fashions are showcased at our grand runway show, and voted on by a panel of judges.  The categories for critique are Originality, Creative Complexity, Overall Presentation and Technical Attributes.  The show is taking place March 8th 2013 in the Seawell Grand Ballroom at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, in Denver.  Part of the proceeds from the auctioned fashion designs at the Paper Fashion Show™ benefit Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA), a local community organization that provides after-school arts programs for at-risk youth. Kids participate in projects that help build self-esteem and increase connection to the community. ADCD has donated more than $22,500 to DAVA since the Paper Fashion Show’s™ conception in 2004.

Inside scoop from one of the designers, Anh Phan:

anh_not_on_1337061499_600AND…I have a SUPER talented friend, Anh Phan, in the show!  This will be her fifth year participating and this year she plans to work with something a little different- paper sequins!  There is so SO much work and detail, and MANY MANY HOURS of labor that go into all of these looks and I am excited to attend and cheer Anh on!  She also shared that she is sponsored by Gruppo Cordenons, a specialty paper mill, this year!  Nice job Anh!  She says the look she is going for this time around is “edgy, sparkly and fabulous!”  Sounds like it’s right up Fashion Folio’s alley!

Anh is also about to launch her own website, which I can not wait to scoop, Style for Breakfast.  Yup, she’s like a triple threat…She is hoping to launch it right before the show and she will share behind the scenes coverage of her inspiration and creative process leading up to the show.  You can also check out her inspiration board on Pinterest here.

      Jessica~

I completely did think about adding photos of Anh’s previous Paper Fashion show creations, but as I posted this late last night, and had no luck sourcing any on the internet, I went ahead and posted without any. I have asked Anh to send me some personally and the post edits are in the works! Watch for it in the coming days! thanks for reading Jessica!
